Commission on the Small Membership Church

The Commission on the Small Membership Church is a ministry area under the direction of the Discipleship Ministry Team.

The members of the Commission focus on discovering ways to help the smaller church, in the Oklahoma Conference of The UMC, to realize their full potential through providing support, encouragement and resources.

The Commission and Discipleship Ministries of the Small Membership Church would like to offer the use of "The Covenant Bible Study" kit to your church. "Covenant" is a 24-week, in depth group Bible study in which people read and discuss the Bible together; learning how to love God and others better. It is broken into three eight-week modules, each dealing with a different aspect of what covenant means: Creating, Living and Trusting. The kit is normally priced at $235. One of these kits is available for loan to your church for a period of 28 weeks, free of charge.

Grants are available for ministry from the commission.

There are a limited number of grants awarded each year. Applicants will be considered based on funding availability.

The Oklahoma Board of Laity and the UM Foundation are excited to announce a brand new opportunity for Oklahoma UM small/rural churches… the Van Sickle Small Rural Church Fund.

Small churches will be able to apply for (up to a $5,000) grants by completing a simple, on-line form. Find the application form here.

The key for selection rests in identifying and dreaming about a ministry that can infuse spiritual vitality and bring people closer to Jesus Christ. And if a rural church has capital needs, the fund may match what the church raises (up to $5,000).

The selection for grants will be accomplished early in the year with recognition at Annual Conference in May.

The deadline for application is December 15.

The Board of Laity sub-committee will review applicants and forward their selection to the Cabinet and Bishop for approval.

In February award recipient(s) will be announced.
