Ministry in a Minute
Clergy and staff in the Oklahoma Conference Ministry Center visited the First Americans Museum on Dec. 16, 2021. The visit was part of the conference’s ongoing work to confront and address issues of race and racism in ministry leadership, the local church and the conference as a whole.
The First Americans Museum opened in September 2021 after originally breaking ground in 2005. Rev. David Wilson, assistant to the bishop and leader in the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference, joined the staff on their tour. Several members of the OIMC contributed to the work of the museum, which tells stories from the 39 tribes in Oklahoma.
The two conferences have joined together for other events that focus on issues surrounding race and racism, and they intend to increase the opportunities for partnership. Members of the cabinet and the Minority Local Church Concerns ministry team participated in an immersion-style event with the OIMC in November 2021. Plans for OIMC members to join the Oklahoma Conference for an educational event are underway.
