Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church

Judicial Council to rule on constitutionality of petitions passed during GC2019

4/5/2019

The Judicial Council will review both the Traditional Plan and the disaffiliation petition passed during the 2019 General Conference (GC2019) when they hold their next regular meeting April 23-26 in Evanston, Illinois.

The General Conference referred the Traditional Plan to the Judicial Council for review after it was passed by a vote of 438-384. Nine of the original plan’s 17 petitions were declared unconstitutional either in part or in whole.

The original disafilliation petition was also declared unconstitutional because it omitted the annual conference as the body ratifying a local church vote to change affiliation (¶33). The Council of Bishops believes the ammended petition passed during GC2019 contains the same violation.

GC2019 petitions that are found to be constitutional will go into automatic effect on Jan 1, 2020.
