Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church

Conference offers guidelines for church donations to UMCOR

By Wayne Wilczek
OKUMC Director of Accounting

Prompted by late season tornadoes in December 2021, the Oklahoma Conference released suggested guidelines for church donations to the United Methodist Committee on Relief, or UMCOR.

When a church takes up a collection for UMCOR, congregants should make any checks payable to the church, not to UMCOR. The church then has some different options for how to send the total donation.

The first option is for the church to send the total donation to the conference either with their regular apportionment payment or as a special apportionment item. The apportionment should be recorded on the regular contribution form on line 785, titled UMCOR-Designated Projects, and designate “U.S. Disaster Response.” The conference will, in turn, send the donation to UMCOR as an apportionment payment with credit for the gift going to the church.

A second option is for churches to send the total gift directly to UMCOR. The church will receive credit for the gift, however, the gift will not be recorded on the congregation’s apportionment statement.

Individual contributions that are not collected by the church must be sent directly to UMCOR. Direct payment is available on the UMCOR website at umcmission.org/areas-of-impact/#disasters. Individual donations can also be mailed to Global Ministries/UMCOR, GPO, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY, 10087-9068. Individual checks made out to UMCOR cannot be processed by the conference office.
