Author Stephen Gunter to speak at AC 2022

Dr. Stephen Gunter
Professor Stephen Gunter is a retired clergy member of the Oklahoma Annual Conference. His ministry began as a church planter in Waco, Texas, and while he was completing his seminary education at The Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, he pastored a congregation in Independence, MO. In 1974 he accepted the assignment to pastor a Dutch-speaking congregation near Amsterdam, while he completed his doctoral studies at Leiden University, The Netherlands. Upon completing his doctoral course work, he became professor and academic dean at The Nazarene Theological School in Buesingen bei Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He spent more than two decades at The Candler School of Theology, Emory University, and Duke Divinity School – where he served as Research Professor and Associate Dean for Methodist Studies. When he retired in 2017, Duke granted him the status of Research Professor Emeritus. The author of a score of scholarly articles, and author or co-author of many books, he has lectured and preached in more than 20 countries and world areas on Wesleyan theology and Evangelism in the Wesleyan Spirit. In addition to serving as the director for The Foundation for Evangelism’s E. Stanley Jones Professors of Evangelism program, he serves as the Theologian in Residence at Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City. His most recent book, Arminius and His ‘Declaration of Sentiments’ (Baylor University Press) was translated into Portuguese, and the 4th edition of his The Quotable Mr. Wesley is being distributed to each delegate to this year’s Annual Conference.
