Ministry snapshots - Zzzz…Tulsa-Faith helps children rest well
In Tulsa, Faith UMC started an unusual ministry,"Good Night — Sleep Tight," in August 2012.
The church gives free beds and linens to children who don’t have beds of their own.
Patterned after a beds ministry at UM Church of the Resurrection, Kansas City, this Tulsa ministry had given away 55 beds to deserving families, as of mid-January.
Faith Church’s initial research identified several Tulsa churches that donated used furniture to disadvantaged families, but no specific ministries addressing a need for children’s beds. Faith UMC began working with school officials and counselors in nearby elementary schools. Children who benefit may be sleeping on the floor, their families adversely affected by circumstance.
The effort has expanded to connect with people through aid agencies such as Restore Hope and Tulsa Educare. Other area churches have contacted Faith UMC, too, as word about this special ministry has spread.
Through a partnership with a local mattress store, Faith UMC purchases new bed kits (mattress, box spring, and frame) at reduced prices.
This ministry is funded in part through Faith Church’s Mission Committee budget, and in part through generous contributions from the congregation.
