Leland Clegg UMC seeks former members for golden event
As the 50th anniversary approaches for Leland Clegg Memorial UMC in Oklahoma City, event planners are seeking contact information for members or clergy from past years.
The church will celebrate its golden anniversary on Oct. 6 with a day of events. Bishop Robert Hayes Jr. will lead a vespers service and attend a reception beginning at 4 p.m. at the church, 102 E. Hefner Rd. If you know about a member or clergyperson formerly active in the Clegg UMC family, contact the church, 405-401-4480, or email marla.lobo@yahoo.com. Leland Clegg established 20 congregations during his nine years as superintendent of the Oklahoma City District. The first service for what became the church that bears his name was a rather modest one in an Army barracks in the middle of a field. Baskets from the kitchen served as offering plates. That property was purchased, and the dream of a permanent building was realized in Fall 1964. Members did all the finishing of the interior, including working from dawn until 11 p.m. on the day before the opening. Eighty percent of the congregation worked that day. As they were leaving, founding pastor Douglas McPherson called them back. "Our first service here needs to be with this group," he declared. And so the very first service in the building was Holy Communion that night. |
