Tulsa church's hospitality gains certification from denomination
In Tulsa, Will Rogers United Methodist Church learned July 1 that it has earned certification as an official Welcoming Congregation. "Welcoming Congregations" nationwide meet criteria that include embracing newcomers and providing opportunities in discipleship. The recognition is offered through United Methodist Communications (UMCOM), the denomination’s media agency. The United Methodist Church places high value on radical hospitality as a vital ministry. Will Rogers UMC now is designated as a Welcoming Congregation on the denomination’s Find-A-Church.org website. "We thank you for ensuring newcomers know the people of The United Methodist Church have open hearts, open minds, and open doors," wrote Anthony Gooding of UMCOM to Pastor Bob Johns. This welcoming program is part of a larger effort launched in 2000 by UMCOM. The theme "Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors" has been supported through advertising. To help certified churches stay engaged and empowered with relevant ideas, UMCOM coordinates a forum for sharing success stories and online training courses, including Web Ministry, Welcoming Ministry, Communicate Vitality, etc. Find out more at www.umcom.org.
