Bishop's gathering -Build skills in preaching, worship

Designed especially for clergy, the 2012 Bishop’s Gathering in late September will focus on worship and preaching.

All clergy under appointment are encouraged to attend the Sept. 24-25 program at The Reed Center in Midwest City. The leadership team also noted that church staff involved in planning and leading worship will find value in this.

Guest presenters are Marcia McFee and Jim Jackson.

Most recently, Rev. Dr. McFee designed and led 22 worship services over a 10-day period at the 2012 General Conference. Rev. Dr. Jackson, senior pastor at Chapelwood UMC, Houston, is a recognized leader in church growth in the South Georgia, Northwest Texas, and Texas Conferences.

The Bishop’s Gathering will begin Monday morning and conclude with Tuesday noon worship.

Monday, Sept. 24

  • 8 a.m. – Registration
  • 10 a.m. – Worship McFee leading, Jackson preaching)
  • Noon – Lunch
  • 1 p.m. – Workshop on worship (McFee leading)
  • 2 p.m. – Q&A discussion on worship
  • 3:30 p.m. – Breakout sessions on worship planning (small groups, organized by church size)
  • 4:30 p.m. – Worship. Homily by Bishop Hayes.

Tuesday, Sept. 25

  • 8 a.m. – Seated breakfast
  • 8:30 a.m. – Worship (McFee leading, Jackson preaching)
  • 10:15 a.m. – Workshop on preaching (Jackson leading)
  • 11:30 a.m. – Panel on preaching
  • Noon – Closing worship. Homily by Bishop Hayes.

Cost is $89 for sign-up by Sept. 7. After that date, cost is $99.


McFee at 2012 General Conference

Marcia McFee

Marcia McFee is an author, worship designer and leader, professor, preacher, and artist. Her passion for helping the church to worship God fully is especially directed toward the education of local congregations.

Participants have commented that her workshops are inspirational as well as practical.

In addition to her experience with local church worship, Rev. Dr. McAfee has provided worship design and leadership at numerous national and regional gatherings for 18 years.

McFee has been a guest lecturer and adjunct faculty at nine seminaries, and she served as the North Texas Conference consultant on Worship & the Arts.

She received a master’s degree at Saint Paul School of Theology, with a concentration in preaching and worship, and was recently given the Outstanding Graduate Award by that seminary’s alumni

association. She earned a Ph.D. in liturgical studies at Graduate Theological Union, with an allied field of ethics.

Jim Jackson

Arriving at Chapelwood UMC, Houston, in 1994, James F. "Jim" Jackson has led the congregation through significant growth in membership, facilities, and programs.

He is a fourth-generation United Methodist pastor.

Rev. Dr. Jackson is a frequent evangelist at revivals, camp meetings, religious emphasis weeks, and other preaching events. He teaches often at Christian Enrichment Schools and in university lectureships. He is a church consultant.

His most recent books include "Spiritual Lessons from Life," a daily devotional collection, and a second volume. His daily radio messages, "Lessons from Life," air on the BUZZ (94.5), an alternative rock station in Houston.

His extensive biography includes membership on the Leading Edge Senior Pastors’ Task Force, Texas Annual Conference, and service as a trustee for that conference’s Emerging Leader’s Initiative Endowment.

Jackson is a certified mediator and arbitrator with Lombard Peace Center.

He received his master’s degree at Candler School of Theology and D.Min. at San Francisco Theological Seminary.
