Happy 125th Birthday, Tulsa-First
This fall, First United Methodist Church in Tulsa will celebrate 125 years of ministry. This milestone moment will be marked by several events, beginning Sept. 18. On that Sunday afternoon, a Van Cliburn International Award winner, pianist Haochen Zhang, will present a concert at 4:30. The celebration will continue Oct. 9, when the church family will gather for lunch and Holy Communion after Sunday morning services. The culmination of this anniversary year will take place Nov. 13 with two services. Kristin Schriks, Miss Oklahoma 2000, calls First UMC her church home, and she will join the Cathedral Choir and Orchestra in a multimedia celebration. Established in 1886, the church began serving the area before Tulsa was even a city. First Church has been a strong presence through oil booms, riots, droughts, and more. Its great gothic cathedral was constructed during the Depression years, serving as a beacon of hope to the disheartened. To contact the church: www.fumctulsa.org, 918-592-3862. |
