ON TARGET TO GROW (Cheyenne UMC )

5/27/2011

In western Oklahoma, volunteers at Cheyenne UMC train as archery instructors. Among them: Greg Keith, Randy Parman, Greg Allen, Scott Ford, Jimmy Terry, Kathyrn Minor, Tandy Moore, and Tonya Roark.

ON TARGET TO GROW—A blast came from the whistle, and eight volunteers took their places at the line. "Bows on your toes!" and "Remember your 11 steps!" commanded national archery instructor Kevin Vogt.

This was the scene at Cheyenne UMC earlier this year as eight people spent a Saturday training to be archery instructors for middle-school-age youths.

Pastor Greg Keith said the church first learned about the program during Vacation Bible School last year, when a session on archery was offered. "The kids really liked it," he said.

"Making Christ the Target for Our Lives" is the slogan for the Centershot Ministries program, which teaches youths both archery skills and important Christian principles, with biblically-based life lessons. Instructor Vogt explained archery safety protocols are built into the program.

"The main thing is to reach an age group that we haven’t been able to reach. This program gives us that opportunity, and we are excited about that," said Rev. Keith.

"We expect to have weekly sessions for eight weeks. The goal is to introduce young people to Christ and begin that process of growing in Christ." —Pat Versteeg
