Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church

Benefits explained for clergy

November events are designed to inform Oklahoma’s clergy about the pension and healthcare benefits programs in which they participate.

The "Clergy Benefit Essentials Retreat" is offered twice.

  • Nov. 4-5 at Canyon Camp, Hardt Lodge

  • Nov. 11-12 at Camp Egan, Holliman Lodge

At each retreat, two tracks will be offered, on distinctive financial issues. Track 1 is for new and mid-career clergy. Track 2 is for clergy who are nearing retirement.

The retreats start at 1:30 p.m. Thursday and conclude at 3 p.m. Friday.

Pre-registration is required. Sign up online at: www.okumc.org/registrations/register/10.  Fee is reduced for participants who do not stay overnight.

The Oklahoma Conference Board of Pension and Health Benefits is supplementing the cost of the retreat.

Lay leadership reports plans

News to note from the Board of Laity meeting on Sept. 11:

  • The former Scouting Ministries board has been renamed as "Scouting & Youth-Serving Ministries." The group works to help churches connect with Girl and Boy Scouts, 4-H, Campfire USA, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"It is sometimes hard for these groups to find a place to meet," said Susan Williams, that board’s new leader. "Reach out to them," she urged of each church.

The board has established leadership in each district. To contact Williams: sleewilliams@cox.net,  405-340-5369 or 405-615-6036.

  • Training courses for Lay Speaking Ministries will be offered Nov. 6-7 in Clinton District, and Nov. 19-20 in Ardmore District (Cross Point Camp).

Pat Parvin, who chairs this Conference ministry, also reported 22 young people took the Basic Course in lay speaking during the 2010 CYME Camp.

In February, Parvin became president of the denomination’s Association of Conference Directors of Lay Speaking Ministries, announced Conference Lay Leader Judy Benson.

  • The annual observance of Laity Sunday is set for Oct. 17. Find lots of worship resources at www.gbod.org.

  • An informational meeting will be held Nov. 6 at OKC-St. Luke’s for lay members interested in the nominations process for General and Jurisdictional Conference delegates.

Golf will boost 2 churches

The name of a benefit golf tournament Oct. 25 illustrates a happy collaboration between two churches that minister in Norman and Moore.

The "Cross the Bridge" tournament will be at Belmar Golf Club, 1025 E. Indian Hills Rd., Norman. Funds raised will support CrossTimbers UMC in Moore and BridgeView UMC in Norman.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. that Monday, followed by lunch, and 1:30 p.m. start time.

More information is available from either church. Sponsorship support is requested by Oct. 8. Send e-mail inquiries to: crossthebridgegolftournament@yahoo.com
