United Methodist Communications has been preparing for the 2019 special session of General Conference by developing resources and training opportunities designed to help meet church leaders' and members' various communication needs.
These resources have been crafted to help you communicate effectively before, during and after the special session. We'll be continuing to develop additional resources as we move forward. We invite you to explore and utilize these tools:
Traditionally, United Methodist Communications has hosted a pre-conference briefing to prepare communicators for General Conference. Because the 2019 special session of General Conference is a single-issue event, convening a traditional briefing could inadvertently lead to the premature discussion of the issues or the appearance thereof.
In lieu of a pre-conference briefing, we created a digital resource titled Communicating about General Conference, which is housed as a course on the UMC Training platform. The course features topic-based discussion forums, contains a variety of multimedia resources and is updated as new information becomes available.
United Methodist Communications offers media relations and crisis communication training to annual conferences at no cost, as well as confidential consultation to help you face communication challenges.

Church member connections
As the special session draws closer, church members can enroll in the no‑cost Exploring General Conference training course to better understand the importance and function of General Conference.
Please help us promote this training course to members by sharing this link: https://www.umctraining.org/product?catalog=EG-Conference
The special session will also be livestreamed in its entirety on UMC.org/live next month so that all United Methodists can be a part of this historic denominational event.
Inspiration for our future
United Methodist Communications has created a new advertising and awareness campaign — "The Movement Continues" — which aims to give hope for the future direction of the church. The campaign seeks to inspire church members and leaders to feel encouraged, assured and hopeful, regardless of the outcome of the special session.
The campaign has already launched and you might have already seen the advertisements in church publications; you will also see the campaign around the 2019 General Conference venue in St. Louis. Watch for an announcement very soon about campaign resources and where to find them.
We'll be continuing to develop and share further resources, information and dynamic content that will ensure all of us are prepared to communicate effectively and meaningfully in the coming months.
