28 Weeks Acts Devotion Week 5
WEEK 5 - ACTS 5 - SEPTEMBER 10, 2018
Written by Rev. Aaron Tiger, First United Methodist Church of Tulsa; Jurisdictional conference delegate
Acts gives us a chance to be witnesses to the birth of the church, filled with wonders and challenges. In chapter five of Acts, we have the death of Ananias and Sapphira because of their lying to God, people being healed by Peter’s shadow, the apostles being arrested, imprisoned, miraculously set free, and being threatened to be killed.
In the midst of all this action, the early church was under persecution from the religious leaders, but one wise Pharisee stood up and said “So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” (6:38-39) He reminds them that if this plan is of man it will fail, but if these people, the early disciples, are truly following God, then they will not be able to overthrow them.
I wonder if the people of God are so busy making plans that we are forgetting the Plan-Maker. I wonder if we are not busy in the rooms of the church that we are not seeing God’s signs and miracles in the streets. I wonder if I really believe that God is bigger than the situation in the United Methodist Church that I have not really and truly placed my trust in the movement of the Holy Spirit.
While we read together the journey of the early church in Acts and all the high and lows that come with it, may we all trust in the faithfulness and goodness of God, and may we have the faithfulness of the early disciples who did not get caught up in the drama, but stayed faithful to the mission to go and make disciples. Verse 42 tells us, “And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.”
