|This article continues a series on Oklahoma United Methodist camping.
By David Combs, Director/Manager Canyon Camp
My first church-camp experience at Canyon was Sixth Grade Camp. I still can recall my small group’s "home in the woods," worship in the open-air tabernacle, and relishing s’mores around the campfire.
Now, many years later, my family and I have the privilege of living on site and serving there.
Raising a family at camp is proving to be a wonderful experience! It truly is a unique lifestyle, and each day we are aware of putting one’s faith into practice. My wife and I don’t need to look too hard to share genuine experiences with our daughter about the value of being servants for Christ. The site staff, volunteer leadership, and young campers all contribute toward the lessons learned. Through everybody’s efforts, we ALL understand the importance of a Christian community. We ALL feel and know the love of God.
Canyon Camp’s future is bright with possibilities! Thanks to a generous gift from the Milburn family and overwhelming support from United Methodists across the state, two large new cabins, each 3,100 square feet, will be constructed this spring. We expect to complete both building projects in time for the summer camping season.
These buildings will be comfortable and cost-efficient, and they will serve as the models for future cabins in this beautiful natural setting near Hinton, about one hour’s drive west of Oklahoma City.
We know congregations continue to make camps a priority. District youth camp numbers have been steady. Evaluations have shown that young people are contemplating their roles as Christians in today’s society. Last summer, camp leaders from Clinton, Lawton, Enid, and Woodward Districts reported more than 25 youth campers at their joint event committed their lives to vocational ministry!
Canyon Camp is an extension of each local church. You and I share a common mission: to make disciples for Christ. Remember a time when you attended camp -- the fun activities, new friends, and wonderful moments spent with the Creator! What a difference United Methodist camping can make!
