Remember your loved ones with an endowment

4/20/2012

There are many ways for you to make a gift in remembrance of someone special that will have meaningful significance for your local United Methodist church or favorite United Methodist cause. Here are a few options to consider:

Make a bequest

You may consider making a memorial gift in the future. By directing that a gift be made in someone’s honor in your will or trust, you can continue their legacy.

Your bequest may be made in the following ways:

  • Make a gift of any cash amount

  • Give a specific asset from your estate

  • Make a gift of a percentage of your estate

A gift of cash or property

A gift of cash is one of the simplest ways to remember your loved one or a friend. This gift can be made to your church’s permanent endowment fund, to a memorial fund, or to a specific ministry. When you make your gift, please designate the person you wish to remember.

If you are making a memorial gift of appreciated stock or real estate, your tax deduction may depend on the type of property gifted. Call the Foundation to discuss the best way to transfer your property to us, or visit the planned giving section of our website at www.okumf.org  for more information about gifts of property.

The gift of security

One of the best things we can do for a loved one is to give the gift of security; a charitable gift annuity can mean that security for your loved one.

A gift annuity will provide a lifetime of payments to your loved one no matter how long he or she lives. The payments are fixed and will never change no matter how the stock market, real estate or any other aspect of the economy performs. A charitable gift annuity may be funded through cash, securities or real estate.

The payment rate is based on your loved one’s age. When you fund a gift annuity to benefit someone else, you will have to consider gift tax calculations. However, any gift tax may be offset by the income tax deduction you will receive.

Another benefit is having the satisfaction of knowing you will care for your loved one for as long as he or she lives.

After a lifetime of payments, the gift annuity will be used for mission and ministry by funding an endowment fund for your United Methodist church or favorite ministry. You will create a legacy for you and your loved one.

Any of these methods are ways in which you can honor someone and create a lasting legacy. Contact the Foundation for more information on ways to give in honor or memory of your loved ones.
