Oklahoma Area to host 'Sisterhood of Shoes'

3/12/2010

Wear your travelin’ shoes, sister.

Wear your travelin’ shoes.

Are your shoes for city streets,

Or for dusty rural lanes?*

All women in career church ministry across the South Central Jurisdiction are invited to gather in Oklahoma City on April 12-13 to celebrate the "Sisterhood of the Travelin’ Shoes."

Bishop Judith Craig will be guide as women kick off their shoes, relax, worship, eat, and share together the joys of ministry. The event begins at 1 p.m. Monday and concludes at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church will host the conference activities.

The Courtyard Marriot in Bricktown is the retreat hotel and is offering a special room rate. Reservations must be made by March 29. Call 405-232-2290, and use the code "Women in Ministry."

Registration for the retreat can be sent to Pastor Jeannie Himes, 208 S. Douglas Blvd., Midwest City, Okla., 73130-4208. For registration fees and other information, e-mail her at revjeankc@aol.com or look on Facebook. Discounts are offered for students, and partial scholarships are available.

Deacons, elders, retirees, lay pastors, students, deaconesses, diaconals, and lay missioners are all invited.

Anita Phillips of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference will preach in the opening worship service. A time for getting acquainted in small groups will be followed by free time with a variety of options.

Bishop Craig’s first plenary presentation will be Monday evening at 6:30. Following dinner, the Divine Divas will perform a concert in the Poteet Theater. Oklahoma Conference clergywomen Jessica Moffatt Seay, Amy Venable, and Twila Gibbens-Rickman are the Divine Divas. A dessert bar tops off the evening.

Tuesday will include a second plenary with Bishop Craig and break-out groups focused on diverse ministry topics. After lunch, the retreat will conclude with worship, featuring the preaching of Cheryl Bell from the Kansas West Conference.

"Having been well-fed for our journeys, we’ll put our travelin’ shoes back on and return to the places where the Spirit is calling us to lead," stated Dianne Peters of OKC-Crown Heights.

The Women’s Leadership Team of the jurisdiction will meet immediately following the retreat.

Are you the gal for pumps, or boots,

or sandals and brightly painted toes?

Do they lead you silently on a labyrinth,

down hospital corridors, or chasing a child,

or dancing, dancing, dancing your faith?*
