Neighbors in other nations

2/20/2009

Partnership projects are connecting Oklahomans with people in Bolivia and South Africa. These pictures show moments in two recent trips to those nations by United Methodist groups from the state. Bishop Robert Hayes Jr. participated with both. Above, children surround Bishop Hayes as he breaks ground in Johannesburg, South Africa, for Come Back Mission home, for people affected by HIV/AIDS. At left, VIM Director Jeremy Basset serves Communion during the groundbreaking.

At right, Bishop Hayes meets Juan Evo Morales, the president of Bolivia, in La Paz in January. Clean water projects were a major part of their discussion. At a government ceremony on Feb. 9, Morales told his Cabinet members: "Here we do not come to be famous; here we come to work. We are not here for money, but for the homeland."
