The national president of United Methodist Men had a field day when he visited Oklahoma in August.

Glenn R. Wintemberg of Saint Charles, Mo., was keynote speaker at an August UMM retreat at Canyon Camp. However, he first accompanied George Cockrum of Midwest City to a watermelon patch at Hydro, where they did field work.

They gleaned melons to donate to the camp.

  • A focus on feeding the hungry is a national priority for UMM. The organization is partnered with the Society of St. Andrew, an ecumenical hunger relief ministry. Cockrum is the UMM hunger relief advocate for Oklahoma Conference. Contact him at 405-677-9723.

  • The Potato Project and field gleaning are two ways Oklahoma men have been participating. Wintemberg also introduced a third program, called "Fami1y" (Fast a Meal in 1 Year).
  • Rob Walton of Helena, Conference UMM president, provided an update about the project to purchase and supply copies of the devotional book "Strength for Service" to U.S. military personnel. Donations from individuals and churches have provided enough funds to purchase 10 boxes of 100 books each.

  • Walton said boxes have been delivered to Fort Sill, in Lawton, and to Oklahoma UM chaplains.

  • In 2006, Conference UMM received $267,203 for projects.
