The new gleaning project in Oklahoma Conference continues to grow—literally. Jack Burmeister and Tom Harkins harvested these two big turnips and others from a field in November. The United Methodist Men from OKC-Sunnylane church gathered the produce left behind after commercial food orders were filled. Volunteers also collected beets, pumpkins, and cabbages near Hydro late in the year. Weight of that cabbage totaled 8,745 pounds! Food collected in 2006 totaled 58,587 pounds, reported project coordinator George Cockrum. The leftover vegetables and fruit were delivered to sites with feeding programs, such as Skyline, a United Methodist urban ministry in south Oklahoma City. Cockrum, of Del City, is the Conference’s hunger relief advocate, a role established through UMM and the Society of St. Andrew. To volunteer or for more information, contact Cockrum at 405-677-9723. He also plans to share information through the January and February Local Church Leader Workshops.
