Ministry Protection Minute
By Rick Carlin
The January 2010 renewal for the Oklahoma Annual Conference Insurance and Risk Management Plan is fast approaching. There was not a rate increase on any of the lines of coverage but due to the property values being increased 3% and contents values increased 2% for inflation, your church may see a slight premium increase based on the amount of coverage. Your total premium increase should not be more than 2% and you may not have any increase at all.
The Oklahoma Conference has had significant losses the last three years so no actual rate increase is a blessing. The risk management your church does to prevent losses helps tremendously
in keeping the rates flat. PACT and my office have numerous resources to help with your risk management needs and can supply you with materials and information to help prevent losses.
You will be receiving your January 2010 renewal packet within the first few weeks of December. If you are not in the Oklahoma Conference Insurance Program please be sure your current policies meet or exceed the required limits of coverage as set forth by the Annual Conference. Those limits are as follows:
Property Replacement Cost
Sexual Misconduct $ 1,000,000
General Liability $ 1,000,000
Crime $ 100,000
Worker’s Compensation-
Employers Liability $ 1,000,000
Directors’ and Officers’ Liability $ 1,000,000
Automobile $ 1,000,000
Excess Liability Coverage; $ 5,000,000
If you would like a coverage comparison or a quote please call me at 1-800-460-5678.
Connectional Giving
Giving for the month of October was pretty steady compared to this time last year, which means we didn’t make up any of our deficit for the year. Roughly 69% of apportionments have been paid year-to-date, which is down from 74% this time last year. It is exciting to report that 166 churches have already paid 100% of their apportionments. The McAlester District has the highest number of churches paid with 24 and the Bartlesville District has the highest percentage paid at 85%.
Important – now is the time to review your payments to the Conference by checking the conference web site at
http://www.okumc.org/ok_ytd_ch.asp to be sure that we have posted all of your contributions the way you intended or that you put your contribution on the correct line. Several churches have over paid some line items and we have no way to determine if that is intentional or accidental. Please remember that the asterisked items, also known as the ministerial support items are required to be paid 100%. If you have any questions, or need any help with making adjustments to your payments, you can contact Sandie Weldon, Director of Accounting, at
sweldon@okumc.org or you can call her at 405.530.2068.
Please remember the upcoming offering, United Methodist Students Day on November 22nd. This offering benefits many Oklahoma United Methodist students in the form of scholarships and grants. Your support is vital for their college education.
Circle of Care Sunday Offering
Circle of Care Sunday is December 6th. Will you join us in this statewide effort to help show the love of Christ for our children and youth ministry with a special offering? This has been a difficult year for everyone, and your support of Circle of Care is critical to the children and youth of Oklahoma now more than ever.
With the support of the Oklahoma United Methodist Churches, we are able to continue this ministry to Oklahoma children and youth, infants through young people in college. Today, we are serving more than 300 children and youth through residential and foster care and making a positive Christian influence and difference in their lives.
To order bulletin inserts or request a speaker, please contact Circle of Care at 405-530-2078.
2010 Mileage Rates
Please be on the lookout for the new 2010 mileage rates. They are usually published by the IRS at the end of November. I am not anticipating a major increase like we have seen the past couple of years since the price of gasoline has calmed down and the price of cars have not seen huge increases. Just as soon as it is published, I will let everyone know.
