Annual Conference 2015
Evening of Monday, May 25 through Thursday, May 28, 2015
St. Luke’s UMC and Oklahoma City University’s Freede Center
"On Fire to Serve"
“Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality.” Romans 12:11-13 (MSG)
On Fire to Serve is theme for Oklahoma’s 2015 Annual Conference in May.
Among other conference highlights will be hands-on mission opportunities alongside members of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference, and election of delegates for the 2016 General/Jurisdictional Conferences.
On the menu at right your will find items including general information, the tentative schedule for the week, a description of our mission opportunities, and an invitation to bring UMCOR kits with you to Conference.
You will also find specific information for retirees, youth, and those needing child care.
The Laity Session and the Clergy Executive Session begin our time together at St. Luke’s UMC in Oklahoma City on Monday afternoon, May 25.
That evening, our Conference worship begins with an exciting choir concert from Frederick UMC. Rev. Jorge Acevedo, lead pastor at Grace Church UMC, a multi-site congregation in Southwest Florida, will be our sought after our guest preacher.
Tuesday morning we will convene at Oklahoma City University. Following the Episcopal address by Bishop Hayes and the Laity address by Chuck Stewart we will participate in a teaching time with Rev. Acevedo. The first lay and clergy ballots for delegates to General Conference will follow shortly before lunch. The remaining ballots will be taken in a special session of the Conference beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, in the Freede Center at OCU.
Worship is always a highlight of Conference. In addition to Monday’s Communion and Memorial service, we will be blessed through the Service of Retirement (Tuesday, May 26, 2 p.m.) and the Service of Commissioning and Ordination (Wednesday, May 27, Bishop Robert E. Hayes, Jr., preaching). Additionally, we will begin Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m. in the OCU Chapel with a Service of Word and Table.
Our Wednesday afternoon mission is with the churches of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference (OIMC). You will have the option of driving yourself to one of four Oklahoma City venues or riding a bus to Norman or El Reno. In these six locations you will be fed a meal (at no cost) and experience singing and the story of the OIMC. For those remaining on the OCU campus, you may buy in advance a meal of Indian tacos, and can attend one of two venues in Smith Chapel. It will be a great day!
The offerings at Annual Conference will go support our eight Oklahoma missionaries. We encourage your church to receive a special offering, which you can bring to Conference with you and place in the offering plate during worship. Bishop Hayes will send you a separate mailing about this special offering.
While there is no cost to register for Conference, several meals are offered as part of the Conference-related activities throughout the week Some of these require reservations and advance payment, which you should do as you register. You can pay using PayPal. If you plan to attend the Retired Clergy Banquet, please sign up due to limited seating.
